It’s official. The Heatwave is upon us. As the mercury climbs and we swelter in our shorts you should think about how your diet combines with heat to make you more miserable.
Your body works hard to digest certain foods and a little extra weight can make you more uncomfortable so eat a little lighter! High protein foods and heavy fats are harder for your body to break down so limit these items. We’re not going to argue with a tangy Q Bleu Chicken Sandwich or a Virginia Ham Cubano but you need to have balance during your day.
Alcohol and caffeine are generally bad during extreme heat because of their diuretic effect but our beers are cold and tasty and we offer iced coffees and lattes to cool you off. Moderation, friends. Moderation. Maybe you could switch to a Fresh Berri Smoothie?
Here’s a great irony: Foods that make you sweat are great summer coolers! Something with a little pepper (like a Summer Pepper Pesto & Goat Cheese Sandwich) makes you sweat a little and since on most nice days we’ve got the windows open and the fans blowing the breeze gives you instant natural air conditioning! Give your AC some zing with a Thai Tuna Salad. Tangy, fresh lime and a little chile pepper. Ahhhhhh.
It goes without saying that summer heat screams for water but you don’t have to carry around a Brita to stay supplied. Most types of lettuce are 90% water. Juicy Hanover Tomato? Fresh cucumber? Lots of water. Hey! Fresh Mint Cucumber Salad! We make that! Add a little fresh vinaigrette and some feta and you’ve got yourself a nice plate.
Just because it’s hot doesn’t mean you can’t eat. Fresh, local, crisp, soothing. That’s us. Sure, you could slip into a kiddy pool but wouldn’t you rather slip into the Urban Farmhouse?
